Surfer Boys Lyrics

I used to be
Into magicians
They’re kinda like
Clever magicians
They put you
Under a spell
Confuse you
With an illusion

But then I met
Those surfer boys
Oh boy those
Surfer boys
They’re the ones
That make me smile
Ya see those
Surfer boys
Oh boy those
Surfer boys
Ooh I really
Like their style
I just love those
Surfer boys
Oh boy those
Surfer boys
They’re the ones
That catch my eye
Ya see those
Surfer boys oh boy
Those surfer boys
They know how to
Get me high

High from the waves
Jumping to the sky
Reaching for the sun
Those surfer boys
Oh boy those surfer boys
They know how
To get things done

But I just love
Those surfer boys
Oh boy those
Surfer boys
They’re the ones
That make me smile
Ya see those
Surfer boys
Oh boy those
Surfer boys
Ooh I really
Like their style
I just love those
Surfer boys
Oh boy those
Surfer boys
They’re the ones
That catch my eye
Ya see those
Surfer boys oh boy
Those surfer boys
They know how to
Get me high

High then down low
Flying through the tube
Oooh, they got the moves
Those surfer boys
Oh boy those surfer boys
They really get me in the mood

Well I just love
Those surfer boys
Oh boy those
Surfer boys
They’re the ones
That make me smile
Ya see those
Surfer boys
Oh boy those
Surfer boys
Ooh I really
Like their style
I just love those
Surfer boys
Oh boy those
Surfer boys
They’re the ones
That catch my eye
Ya see those
Surfer boys oh boy
Those surfer boys
They know how to
Get me high

High, High
Higher than the sky
Those surfer boys
Oh boy those
Surfer boys
They’re mine
(They’re mine)
Kind
(all mine)
They’re really really
Really really
My kinda guys

Story Behind This Song

This song was inspired by seeing professional surfers do their thing in real life (not in a video) when I went to the Huntington Beach U.S. Open of Surf for the first time. It was also influenced by a Channel Islands party I happened to come across where Iration played and I got to meet some pro surfers, including Kelly Slater!

You can watch all the amazing surf videos out there, but there is something truly amazing about witnessing the powerful moves these pro surfers can make up close in real life. When Kelly Slater did some airs that year, it was just unbelievable how high he jumped up into the sky, without the aid of a kiteboard, ha!

The Channel Islands party in L.A. was another event that sparked the idea in my head for this song. I had recently seen Iration play live for the first time upfront, close and personal at the Belly Up around the time I wrote this song. I had seen them before with Rebelution at the House of Blues but I was up in the balcony with a group of friends and it was a bit towards the end of a fun night so I didn’t get the full effect of their show. I had discovered them back in the MySpace days and had been listening to them on constant rotation on my iPod for months before I went to the Belly Up show. Let’s just say that show transformed me into the super fan I am of them today! My reason for bringing them up, was that I saw a Facebook post from Micah (one of Iration's singers at the time, as Kai left the band since then), that he was going to some surfing event at Channel Islands in L.A. I did some research and found out that Channel Islands was having a band play at this event and Channel Islands also had a Santa Barbara location which is where Iration formed. The point being, I KNEW Iration would be playing at this event but they couldn’t broadcast it otherwise a swarm of people would be there and the event was a smaller, intimate affair! I love putting my Veronica Mars investigative skills to work, otherwise I would have completely missed out on this awesome event!

This was one of my absolute favorite shows from them as my friend and I had the whole front of the stage to ourselves as it was surprising that not a lot of people knew who Iration was at that point in that crowd. My friend and I were having so much fun dancing and singing to Iration, that I didn’t notice I was right next to Kelly Slater most of the show!! If I had realized that I would have bumped into him “accidentally” a few times, ha. However I was so fortunate to be able to get a picture taken with me and him.

After that event, I wrote this song, as I realized this musician I knew (who doesn’t really surf) who had been messing with my head at the time (and continued to do so for the next year or so), really just wasn’t my type. If a guy wants to have any chance with me, he has to surf. Sorry, but it’s such a passion of mine, I need to be able to relate to a guy on that level. There’s just something that appeals to me about most surfer guys, the way they tend to keep it real brah, vibe the truth, and they’re just basic primal creatures that wanna catch the stoke and live the casual, low maintenance life! Plus, boy do they have the moves, as my song says :)

Oh, and as an added bonus, below is a Iration's music video for their "Turn Around" song which was filmed at this Channel Islands event.  You can catch me and my friend dancing in the front row at :52 second and 4:32 mark, ha!
