Power to the People Lyrics

We live the fabulous life
We’re the American dream
Isn’t it good to be us
Whatever we say
You should believe
That’s what they think
That’s what they say
But nothing they say
Is gonna change my mind
Or make me wanna buy
Something today

Power to the People
The one’s like you and me
Without the fame or money
That comes with celebrity
We all have a right
To be heard
Express ourselves
And spread the word
The famous and elite
Might get more exposure
My our voice is louder
When it comes together
When it comes together

Madonna, she thinks she can
Convert us to Kaballah
Passing out those t-shirts
And saying I know you wanna
Be just like me because
You read those magazines
So you can get a peek
At my reality
Yeah, I must admit
I read US Weekly too
But I read it just for fun
Don’t tell me what to do

Power to the People
The one’s like you and me
Without the fame or money
That comes with celebrity
We all have a right
To be heard
Express ourselves
And spread the word
The famous and elite
Might get more exposure
My our voice is louder
When it comes together
When it comes together

So just stick
To singing your songs
And acting out your scenes
And we’ll keep
Watching your movies
And buying your CD’s

Power to the People
The one’s like you and me
Without the fame or money
That comes with celebrity
We all have a right
To be heard
Express ourselves
And spread the word
The famous and elite
Might get more exposure
My our voice is louder
When it comes together
When it comes together

Come together

Story Behind This Song

I wrote this song a long while back right around the time of the whole Dixie Chicks scandal. I wasn't one to get angry with them for what Natalie said as I feel everyone has a right to their opinion. I still love their songs and listen to their music and would see them live if they ever tour again. What I do get annoyed with though is how celebrities often think they can influence people by spouting off their opinions about things. Now a musical artist could influence me in things that might have to do with music or even if they have a great suggestion for a local restaurant from their home town or something. However when it comes to larger issues such as politics/religion,etc, I have a mind of my own and can make my own conclusion about things by looking at the facts and having faith.

This song is also about the revolutionary internet age, where the power of the internet has truly brought the power to the people. Anyone can have a blog and express their own voice and musical artists have direct access to fans and can truly skip the big corporate labels if they desire. Yes, celebrities and major labels have and can get you a lot more exposure, but our voice is truly louder when it comes together. The power of sharing can also really help propel little artists and make them go big with the advent of things like YouTube.

Power to the People indeed!!
