Finding My Own Way Lyrics

I was a rebel child from a Christian family
I didn’t go to a Christian college
Where everybody was the same as me
I didn’t think I was better than anybody else
No matter what someone believed, no matter how they fell
And I couldn’t wait to get away and just break free
From their sheltered view, their sheltered view of Christianity

I had to do it my way, I had to hit the highway
And open up my eyes to the world out there
I had to find my own way, Monday through Sunday
At a party school, living on their prayer
Monday through Sunday, finding my own way
Monday through Sunday, just finding a way

Every generation has their own kind of temptation
Our time here is no worse than all the rest
And I’m not the type that’s gonna blame good old MTV
For igniting the sin that lives inside of you & me
I have faith that God will keep me as strong as I can be
So I’m not influenced oh, that easily
Sometimes yes I do sin, but I blame no one but me

Monday through Sunday, finding my own way
Monday through Sunday, just finding a way
I had to do it my way, I had to hit the highway
And open up my eyes to the world out there
I had to find my own way, Monday through Sunday
Singing the wrong songs,, living on their prayer
Monday through Sunday, finding my own way
Monday through Sunday, just finding a way

I don’t believe you need to go to church every single week
And in fact I haven’t been for quite some while
My time is much better spent and so more worthwhile
Getting my own point of view by reading the Bible
Instead of going to a church and just taking it
As they’re pushing out their agendas from the pulpit
Cuz then my thoughts just wander as I daydream and sit

Monday through Sunday, finding my own way
Monday through Sunday, just finding a way
I had to do it my way, I had to hit the highway
And open up my eyes to the beautiful world out there
I had to find my own way, Monday through Sunday
At home by myself,, saying my own prayer
Monday through Sunday, finding my own way
Monday through Sunday, just finding a way
Monday through Sunday, finding my own way
Monday through Sunday, just finding a way

Story behind this song

This song is basically my perspective on living life and appreciating this world we live in right now and accepting personal responsibility for our wrong doings instead of blaming secular things from music, MTV, and party schools for affecting a person's character and beliefs.  "I can do all things through God, who strengthens me", I believe is a very popular Bible verse many Christians quote, so I'm calling that one out! God can give me the strength to maintain my character and beliefs in the midst of all the "un-Godly" "secular" stuff out there.

I was practically the only one of all of my cousins to go to a non-Christian college as it was almost a requirement, especially if your parents were helping you out at all.  Well, for me, I paid for pretty much 100% of my education so my college I went to was my school of choice, Indiana University.  It was close, but still a bit away.  It had a great business school and oh yeah, I do have fond memories of watching the IU Hoosiers play basketball, so the school was always on my radar.  I did not go there for the basketball, ha.  The year I graduated, IU was named the top party school in the nation, but I had some great times going to school there and I still maintain my beliefs, even though they may be a bit more progressive/open minded than a lot of "Christians" out there.

I did learn one thing from college, and that was to think critically and not just take what people say at face value and automatically believe everything.  That's my main problem I have with church.  Going to church is great, especially as a kid to develop a foundation of faith and belief.  However I think it's more like going to school, after a certain point, you just need to start learning things on your own.  Some people need that community of like minded believers which is great and that's why they should go, but it's not for everyone.  To me, I'm closer to God just out there surfing in the waves and being humbled by God's direct creations.  I started reading the Bible word for word when I lived in Chicago, so I could get my own perspective as well.  It's amazing some of the things you find in there that the church doesn't focus on, but they do focus on other things that aren't really even mentioned in the Bible.

Everyone has there own way of doing things.  People may take different paths, but a lot of those paths end up at the same place, and that is what this song is about.  It's funny, as Iration came out with a song on their album "Automatic" that is called "Go That Road" that has a similar meaning I think.  Hmmm, had they been listening to my music and gotten that idea from me?  Probably not, but I just like to think so.  Also, Terri Clark (a country artist), has a song called "God & Me" that kind of inspired this song for me. The song references just being out in nature and feeling closer to God that way vs. listening to some preacher on a TV.  Everyone has their own way and their own style, you can't force a square peg through a round hole!
